Burn Injury Classification
Burns are caused not only by fires and hot elements, but also by electricity, chemicals, friction, or radiation. Minor burns, such as sunburns, heal on their own over time, although they may leave scars or skin damage. However, more serious burns require immediate emergency treatment for the victim.
If you have been severely burned, it is important to seek emergency medical assistance as soon as possible. Bellaire Emergency Center is open and staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help you and your family. To learn more, contact us by calling 712-669-9900.
Burn Depth
Burns are commonly classified according to the depth of the resulting injury to indicate their severity. The classes of burns include:
- First degree. Involves only the outer layer of the skin and causes skin to turn red and dry.
- Second degree. Involves the other layers of the skin. The burn is painful, is moist in appearance and causes blisters.
- Third degree. This type of burn extends through all layers of the skin. Since pain sensors have been destroyed, the burn feels painless.
- Fourth degree. This burn may involve the muscles or bones beneath the skin. Treatment may necessitate amputation.
Second, third, and fourth degree burns require immediate treatment to prevent additional injury and complications. In some cases, these burns can be life threatening or cause serious impairment. If you have been seriously burned, seek emergency assistance as soon as possible.
