Chicken Pox

Chicken pox is a common illness that is highly contagious. It is caused by the Varicella zoster virus and can occur in both adults and children, though infection is more common during childhood. Children often become infected with the chicken pox virus at school, in day care, or in other settings where the virus can be quickly transmitted from child to child. Varicella is an airborne virus and can therefore spread very rapidly.

Symptoms of Chicken Pox

Chicken pox is easily identified by the red pockmarks that appear all over the body. Other symptoms may include:

  • Red rash
  • Itchy skin
  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • Headache

Typically, chicken pox is a mild illness that subsides within several days. In very young children and individuals with compromised immune systems, chicken pox can lead to other health complications. A more serious bacterial infection may develop and threaten a patient’s health. Having a case of chicken pox examined by a doctor can help to ensure that you or your child is not experiencing more serious symptoms.

Chicken Pox Vaccine

Getting vaccinated for chicken pox can help to prevent an infection. The vaccine is typically offered between 12 and 15 months, but older children and adults who have not had chicken pox can also be vaccinated. Once a person has had chicken pox or has been vaccinated, it is very rare for them to contract the infection again.
