Fractured vs. Broken Bones

If you or someone you know has hurt an arm, leg, or other bone, you may be concerned about whether it may be fractured or broken. To many of us, a broken bone sounds like a more severe injury than a fracture, but in fact these terms refer to the same injury. Whether you call it a fractured bone or a broken bone, both refer to a bone that cracks, or fractures, from force being placed upon it. There are, however, different types of breaks or fractures which may require different methods of treatment.

Types of Bone Fractures

Fractures are typically broken into two categories: acute and chronic. The severity of the break and the nature of the injury are affected by:

  • The type of activity that caused the break
  • The amount of force applied to the bone
  • The strength of the bone

An acute fracture is caused by a one-time event, such as a car accident or a fall that puts excessive stress on the bone and causes it to break. A person with strong bones may experience only a small hairline fracture, whereas a person with more brittle bones may have a more severe break.

Chronic fractures, on the other hand, occur when a low-impact activity is repeated over and over and eventually results in a fracture to the bone. This type of fracture is also known as a stress fracture and is common among athletes and individuals who regularly perform physical work.

Receiving Medical Treatment

It is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible if you believe that you have a fractured bone. Neglecting to have such an injury treated could cause it to heal improperly, causing long-term pain and / or limited range of motion. Moreover, in some cases dangerous infections might arise. Consulting with an experienced ER professional can help to identify the extent of the injury and what treatment you should undergo to ensure that the bone heals properly.
