Paramedics
A paramedic is a highly-trained medical professional who responds to medical emergencies outside of hospitals and other medical facilities. Paramedics are often the first medical professionals on the scene of an accident or other emergency. They are trained to quickly identify illnesses and injuries, their severity, and they must know how to keep a patient alive while he or she is transported to an emergency care center.
What Do Paramedics Do?
Paramedics are trained to deal with a variety of different medical emergencies, including the following:
- Airway management
- Breathing assistance
- Burn management
- Circulation
- Cardiac arrest
- Cardiac monitoring
- Drug administration
- Fracture assessment and management
- Obstetrics
- Patient assessment
- Spinal injury management
- Wound management
Different levels of paramedics and EMTs are able to perform more advanced skills at the scene of an emergency. In most cases, paramedics are also authorized to administer medications to individuals if their conditions necessitate it.
Paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are an integral part of the emergency care system and work hard to help people get the care they need, when they need it. If someone has been injured and needs emergency care, paramedics and EMTs stay with the patient until he or she reaches the ER unit.
