Proper Cast Care
A cast is a custom-made protective sleeve that is worn over an injured bone to help it heal properly and protect it while it is still in the fragile healing stage. Casts are most commonly worn on the arm, leg, or foot and are typically prescribed if a bone is fractured or if a patient has undergone surgery. Once a cast is set, it will remain in place for several weeks while the affected area heals. Taking care of your cast during this time is important for helping your bone heal as quickly and fully as possible.
Taking Care of Your Cast
A cast may feel tight at first because of swelling around the injured area. To limit swelling, be sure to keep the limb raised above your heart by propping up your arm or leg. Wrapping a pack of ice fully around the cast can also help to reduce swelling around the injury. Some other tips for taking care of your cast are:
- Keep the cast dry at all times.
- If the cast becomes dirty, clean it with a damp cloth and wipe dry.
- Use a cast cover or plastic bag to seal your cast while you bathe.
- Avoid showers as water droplets can easily become trapped between your skin and the cast.
- If your cast becomes too loose or the skin under your cast becomes wet, be sure to contact your doctor. It may be necessary to have your cast replaced.
If your cast becomes wet and is not replaced promptly, the skin under the cast could become infected. Visiting your doctor for a checkup can help to ensure that your injury is healing properly and that there are no risks of other health complications.
