How to Treat Food Poisoning

Although many cases of food poisoning are mild and last approximately one day, other cases can leave you suffering for up to a week. During this time, it is important to take care of your body so that you can recover. Some methods to treat food poisoning include:

  • Regulating nausea – your body attempts to rid itself of the poison through vomiting and diarrhea. Try not to eat any solid foods until the vomiting begins to lighten. Once you do begin to eat, start with mild and light food such as crackers, white bread, clear soups, rice, and cooked cereal.
  • Treating for dehydration – as a result of vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration can happen very easily. Make sure to sip clear fluids, especially water, at first. As the nausea lightens, continue to drink increase water and fluid intake after having food poisoning.

Certain food-borne diseases can cause severe and very dangerous food poisoning. If your symptoms last two days or longer or you do not respond to treatment, seek help immediately by calling 911 or visiting the Bellaire Emergency Center.
