Urinary Tract Infections
A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is a type of bacterial infection that affects the urinary tract, which is made up of the kidneys, bladder, urethra, and several other parts of the body. The symptoms of this type of infection usually include a burning sensation when urinating and an increased frequency of urination. For many individuals, a UTI can progress from a mild irritation to a severe pain in a matter of hours. For this reason, it is very important that you seek immediate medical attention if you believe you have a UTI.

Causes of Urinary Tract infections
UTIs are caused when bacteria makes its way into the urinary tract through the urethra. There are many different ways for you to be exposed to the bacteria that cause UTIs. Unfortunately, some of the most common causes are not easily avoided. The known causes include:
- Intercourse—studies suggest that intercourse accounts for 75-90% of UTIs in young, sexually active women
- Gender—unfortunately, women are far more prone to UTIs due to the location of female urethras
- Urinary catheters – these devices can create a pathway for bacteria to enter the urinary tract
- Genetic predisposition – some people are simply more susceptible to the bacteria that causes UTIs
If left untreated, urinary tract infections can lead to severe kidney infections and other health complications.
