What is an Ultrasound?
If you or a loved one has ever been pregnant, you may have had ultrasound work done to diagnose the health and development of your baby. Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to take an in-depth look at a person’s body tissue, organs, and blood flow, and can easily detect a baby’s presence. Ultrasounds, or sonograms, are used in many branches of medicine, though most people associate them with pregnancy.

Process of an Ultrasound
When undergoing an ultrasound for the first time, people may be very unfamiliar with the process and feel uncomfortable. In general, the process of receiving an ultrasound is as follows:
- 1. Gel is applied to the skin (conducive to sound wave detection)
- 2. Ultrasound waves are detected through an ultrasound machine
- 3. Images of organs / blood flow / tissue appear on medical monitors
- 4. Monitors store “useful” images
- 5. Physicians make diagnoses using these images
Ultrasounds of pregnancies most often are saved to show expecting parents images of their developig child, and can indicate the sex and health of the unborn child. However, there are a variety of conditions that may necessitate the use of ultrasounds
